Gubbio Jazz Brunch: Good
Food and Good Company

The second annual Gubbio Community Jazz Brunch was held on Veteran's Day, November 11th, 2013.

Jazz classics were performed live, courtesy of the Musicians Union Local 6. Volunteers cooked a meal of crepes topped with banana caramel sauce and/or sausage gravy with a side of baked basque eggs.

In attendance were over 70 homeless guests who had been resting in the pews of St Boniface that morning. They were joined by 40 supporters and volunteers of The Gubbio Project, most of whom participate in the weekly breakfast program, cooking and sharing a meal with homeless guests each Friday.

We want to give special thanks to the head cook of the Jazz Brunch, Chuck Yenson, who is a regular breakfast volunteer through the Knights of St. Francis. Chuck wins the award for fanciest meal ever created under Gubbio's name! Kitchen volunteers included employees of Zendesk and community members of the San Francisco Zen Center as well as other regular Gubbio volunteers. All photography is courtesy of Alyssa Schrag Photography. Thank you!

Stuart Hall Interns

This fall The Gubbio Project has had the privilege of welcoming two new volunteers from Stuart Hall High School.  Lucas Chan and Gerald Reader have been volunteering weekly as part of a social justice class.  During their time at Gubbio, they've sorted donations, packed hygiene kits and assisted the hospitality monitors.  We are excited for them to continue their service throughout the course of the school year!

Outreach and Cleaning in the Golden Gate 100's

The Gubbio Project and DeMarillac Academy have been flyering weekly on our block and washing down the sidewalks each afternoon.  This is an attempt to do several things: to give information about low-barrier services to housed and unhoused neighbors in the area who may need it; to disrupt, if just for an hour, the business-as-usual drug dealing that happens on the block; to connect with and meet neighbors and colleagues in partner organizations doing service and justice work in the area; and to keep the area safe and clean for all of the neighbors.

Gubbio's two-fold mission is to provide a clean, warm, safe place for our unhoused neighbors to rest during the day; and to cultivate a sense of community among people experiencing homelessness and a sense of understanding and shared responsibility in the broader church and neighboring communities.  Our outreach and cleaning is an attempt to address both of those goals.

Need: Boxes of Bags

The Gubbio Project is in need of large plastic garbage bags: 13, 33, 45 gallon sizes. We hand out over 100 of these bags to guests each week. Plastic bags are used to keep valuables and personal belongings safe and dry, especially during the cold and rainy months.
Next time you are buying yourself a box of bags, consider buying one for Gubbio too!
